"Inside Out 2", released in July 2024, has become Disney's box office champion with its unique and profound theme and wonderful characterization.

Joy, Sorrow, Disgust, Anger, and Fear that appear in the first part are often understood as "children's emotions". The more accurate term is "primary emotions”. “Primary” here does not refer to individual age, but to the dimensional level of emotion—the emotion that is your first reaction to any event, such as fear when you see a spider jump on your face.

Corresponding to it is "secondary emotions". Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui in the second part are all secondary emotions. Secondary emotions refer to an individual's reaction to primary emotions. In the same example, after being scared by a spider and finding that everyone is looking at you, the embarrassment generated at this time is a secondary emotion.

So what are the unknown aspects of Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui?

(Anxiety)

“He keeps Riley safe from things she can see. My job is to keep her safe from things she can’t。”

As soon as Anxiety appeared on the scene, she accurately introduced her role and distinguished herself from Fear. Fear is an emotional response to an imminent threat and is more associated with the fight-or-flight response. Anxiety, on the other hand, refers to the anticipation of future worries and is more related to muscle tension and avoidance behavior. This is why Anxiety has her subordinates draw every possible future direction. The ultimate purpose of the existence of anxiety is to "prevent it before it happens", predict every negative possibility, and take intervention measures in advance to reduce the chance of negative possibilities coming true. Feeling anxious is perfectly normal. However excessive anxiety can cause physical and mental harm, just like Riley's panic attack in the movie. If you feel excessively anxious try talking to family and friends with whom you have a good relationship, or record your emotions in a diary, and seek professional help if necessary.

There is no need to think that feeling anxious is a failure. All emotions are trying their best to protect you.

(Ennui)

“Ennui, are you paying attention?” “No.”

With a French accent and a spine that resembles a soft-bodied creature, Ennui is an emotion that everyone is very familiar with - boredom. Boredom is a mental state characterized by a lack of interest, motivation, and engagement in the world. Although it may seem boring and useless on the surface, boredom is a very intriguing emotion.

Many people understand boredom as a void without emotion, but in fact, it is classified as a negative emotion. Like other negative emotions, boredom is able to send out some kind of warning and remind you to make improvements in time- "You have not established an effective connection with the world, you are not realizing your sense of self-worth, and you are not enjoying the world. If you go down here, your life will feel meaningless.” Boredom is usually short-lived and passes away. Once you find yourself falling into chronic boredom, be careful. Chronic boredom can lead to depression and is even linked to depression. However dealing with boredom only requires a few skills, such as experiencing a new environment or changing past "fixed habits.”

(Envy)

“Look at her hair! We need hair like THAT!”

When Envy first appeared on the stage, she captivated an audience with her starry eyes and charming voice. The biggest misunderstanding of admiration is to confuse her with jealousy. After all, "envy, jealousy, and hatred” are similar in many ways. Conversely, Envy and jealousy are two completely different emotions. Envy is the personal pain caused by the fear of losing one's advantages to others or sharing one's advantages with others, then envy is the personal pain caused by the desire to gain advantages over others. In short, envy is possessiveness and greed.

Most of the time, Envy is directed toward those with whom we compare ourselves and our competitors. This means that the object of envy and the object of envy must have some similarities. As Russell wrote: "Beggars are not jealous of millionaires, they are jealous of beggars who are more successful than themselves." Although envy can be seen everywhere in our daily lives, excessive envy is detrimental to our physical and mental health and social relationships. It can feed stronger negative emotions such as resentment and anger, erode our mental health, and even lead to anxiety and depression. On a social level, it can also strain our relationships with others.

(Emmbarrassment)

“Eh…”

It's hard to say how many words Embarrassment, who was covering his face the whole time, says in the whole movie because he is always embarrassed.

Embarrassment is considered a "self-conscious emotion" that can have a profound negative impact on a person's thoughts or behavior. Its purpose is to make people feel bad about their social or personal mistakes as a kind of internal (or social) feedback so that individuals can learn not to make the same mistakes again. It can be understood as an emotion of judging one's behavior. Accompanying physiological changes include blushing, sweating, or stuttering, which is why Embarrassment is a big pink steamed bun.

Everyone feels embarrassed, but the frequency, degree, and impact of embarrassment on their thoughts and behaviors differentiates from person to person. Research shows that people with social anxiety disorder are more sensitive to feelings of embarrassment. At the same time, research has found that "embarrassing others for others" does exist. This phenomenon is called "vicarious embarrassment." Regardless of whether the other person is embarrassed by their behavior, bystanders may feel embarrassed when they realize that the person's behavior is quirky, which stems from our ability to empathize. While embarrassment is often entertained, being frequently embarrassed can damage a person's confidence and sense of self-worth. So, don’t always look back on your past embarrassments intentionally.
